Mortgage Index Declines as Interest Rates Rise

According to the Mortgage Bankers Association, mortgage rates trended upward in mid-January as applications declined, although mortgage volume was still up compared to this time last year. While the Mortgage Composite Index declined 0.6 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis from 671.1 last week, on an unadjusted basis, the index increased 28.9 percent compared with the previous week and was up 9.8 percent compared with the same week last year.

The refinance share of mortgage activity increased to 49.9 percent of total applications. The average interest rate for 30-year fixed-rate mortgages increased to 6.19 from 6.13 percent. The average interest rate for 15-year fixed-rate mortgages increased to 5.92 percent from 5.85 percent. The average interest rate for one-year ARMs increased to 5.85 percent from 5.79. — REALTOR^® Magazine Online
